Compress PDF Online
Shrink a PDF by recompressing the images inside it. Your file is processed in your browser, so it never uploads anywhere.
Drag a PDF here, or choose a file
Works best on PDFs with photos or scanned pages.
You can also paste a file directly (Ctrl+V or ⌘V).
This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your file is not uploaded to a server at any point.
Try a reproducible example
Choose “Try it with a sample file”, keep Balanced selected, and press Compress PDF. In our browser check on October 8, 2026, the built-in three-page sample went from a displayed 20 KB to 19 KB, saving 991 bytes (about 5%). This is a small example, not a promised reduction for your file.
Download the result and compare page count, small text and images with the original. Keep the original until you have checked the output. A scanned document with large photos can behave very differently from this sample.
How to Compress a PDF
Choose or drag your PDF into the compressor. Filevolo analyzes the images inside the document and recompresses them where doing so can actually reduce the file size. When processing is complete, download the smaller PDF - everything happens directly on your device.
Reduce PDF File Size Without Uploading
Many PDF compression services require your document to be uploaded before processing. Filevolo handles supported compression locally in your browser instead, which makes it useful for personal documents, invoices, scans, reports and other files you would rather keep on your own device.
Need It Under a Specific Size?
Type a size in MB (for an email attachment limit or an upload cap) and Filevolo works its way from the gentlest setting to harsher ones, stopping at the first that actually fits - so you get the best quality that still meets your number, not a fixed preset. If the only way to fit is to lower image resolution it tells you so, and if the target genuinely can't be reached it says that plainly instead of handing back a file that misses it.
What PDFs Compress Best?
Compression works best when a document contains photographs, scans or other JPEG images - these often account for most of a PDF's file size. A PDF made almost entirely from text or vector graphics may already be compact and may not shrink much further.
Image compression can reduce image quality, because that is how the extra space gets saved - text and vector content are never recompressed, and an embedded image is only ever replaced when the recompressed result is actually smaller.
When to choose another approach
If your PDF is already mostly text, repeatedly compressing it is unlikely to help. Remove unneeded pages with Organize PDF, or split the document into parts if the recipient accepts multiple files. Avoid rewriting a digitally signed PDF: modifying its contents can invalidate its signature. For an important scan, check names, dates and small numbers at full size before sending a reduced-quality version.
