How to Fix a Sideways or Upside-Down Scanned PDF

Scanner apps get orientation wrong constantly. Here's how to turn a sideways or upside-down PDF the right way up, in your browser, without losing quality.

Scan a document with a phone app or an office scanner and there is a good chance at least one page comes out sideways or upside down - the app guessed the orientation from how the paper sat in the feeder or how the phone was held, and guessed wrong. It is one of the most common complaints about scanned documents, and one of the simplest to fix.

Fix it

  • Open Rotate PDF and drop in the scanned file.
  • Use rotate left or right - the preview updates instantly, so you can confirm it looks right before downloading.
  • Download the corrected file.

Why every page rotates together

Rotate PDF applies the same rotation to every page in the file. Most scans that come out sideways are sideways throughout - the whole stack went through the feeder the same way - so a single rotation usually fixes the entire document at once. If only some pages are affected because a scan mixed portrait and landscape originals, split the file into the affected range first with Split PDF, rotate that part on its own, then treat them as separate downloads.

While you are in there

Scanned PDFs - especially multi-page ones from a phone camera - are often much larger than they need to be. If the file is also unusually large, Compress PDF recompresses the embedded images and often shrinks it substantially without a visible quality difference.

Common questions

Does rotating affect quality? No - the page content itself is untouched, only the orientation it is displayed at changes.

Is my file uploaded anywhere? No, rotation happens entirely in your browser.
