How to Compare Two PDFs and Find What Changed
Stop reading two contracts side by side - see every word that was added or removed between versions, highlighted automatically.
Published by Filevolo · Report a correction
When a contract, policy, or report comes back as a new version, the real question is usually simple: what actually changed? PDF Compare reads the text out of both files and highlights every difference, so you don't have to read two documents side by side hunting for it.
Upload the original first
The comparison is directional - upload the original, starting-point file first, then the revised version. The result shows what changed going from the first file to the second: additions highlighted in green, removals in red and struck through.
It compares text, not pixels
This reads the actual text content of each PDF and diffs it word by word - it doesn't compare visual layout, images, or formatting. Two pages that read identically but look different (a font or spacing change) won't show as a difference; a changed number, clause, or sentence will.
If one file is a scan
This needs real, selectable text in both files - a scanned page with no text layer has nothing to extract. If one of your PDFs is a scan, run it through OCR PDF first, then compare the result.
Common questions
Can I save the comparison result? Yes - alongside the highlighted on-screen view, there's a plain text download of the full diff.
Will a formatting-only change show up? No. Only differences in the actual text are detected - identical wording in a different font or layout isn't flagged as a change.
Are my files uploaded anywhere? No. Both files are read and compared entirely in your browser.
