Read PDF Aloud

Have a PDF read aloud with your device's own voices, with pause, skip and speed controls, processed in your browser so the document is never uploaded.

This browser cannot read text aloud. Try a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your file is not uploaded to a server at any point.

Listen Instead of Reading

Open a PDF and press play. It is read aloud paragraph by paragraph with the voices already on your computer or phone, and the paragraph being read is highlighted. Pause, skip forward or back, change the speed, or click any paragraph to start from there. It is handy for long reports, for proofreading your own writing by ear, and for anyone who finds listening easier than reading.

Your Device Does the Talking

The PDF is read in your browser and spoken by your browser's built-in speech engine, so the document is not uploaded to Filevolo. The voices on offer depend on your device. Some browsers add online voices, marked as such in the list, which may send the text to their provider, so pick one without that mark if the document is private.

Scanned Documents

A scan is a picture of a page, with no text to read. Run it through OCR PDF first, then listen to the result.

Frequently asked questions

No. Browsers let a page play speech through the speakers but do not hand over the sound as a file, so this tool is for listening on the spot.

No. The text is read from the PDF in your browser and spoken by the speech engine your device already has. Voices marked as online are the exception: they are run by the browser's vendor and may receive the text.

Any language your device has a voice for. The list shows each voice's language, and the tool picks one that matches the document where it can. You can change it at any time.

The voices come from your device, and quality varies a lot. Newer Windows, macOS, iOS and Android systems include much more natural ones, and Edge offers extra natural voices.

The reader recovers paragraphs from the PDF's layout, drops repeated page headers, footers and page numbers, and reads tables row by row. Pictures and charts are not described.
