Why Convert WebP to PNG?

Many websites now serve WebP, so saving an image from a page often leaves you with a file that older editors, some print services and plenty of upload forms will not accept. PNG is understood almost everywhere, and unlike JPG it keeps transparent areas transparent, which matters for logos, icons and cut-out graphics.

What to Expect From the Result

PNG stores every pixel exactly as it appears, so nothing is lost in the conversion itself. It cannot bring back detail that a lossy WebP already discarded, though, and a PNG of a photo is usually several times larger than the WebP it came from. If you do not need transparency and want a smaller file, WebP to JPG is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Transparent areas of the WebP stay transparent in the PNG.

WebP is very good at squeezing photos into small files, usually by discarding detail you are unlikely to notice. PNG keeps all pixels exactly, so a photo is often three to ten times larger. Flat graphics and screenshots grow far less.

A PNG is a single still image, so only the first frame of an animated WebP is converted.

No. The conversion is performed locally in your browser.
