How to Actually Remove Sensitive Information from a PDF

Why a black box drawn over text usually isn't real redaction, and what it takes to make sure nothing is left recoverable.

A surprising number of "redacted" PDFs floating around online aren't actually redacted. Someone drew a black rectangle over a name, an account number, or a paragraph, and the file looks fine - but the text is still sitting there underneath, selectable and copy-pasteable, because a shape drawn on top of a page doesn't delete anything the page already contains. It has been the cause of real, embarrassing leaks.

Why a black box usually isn't enough

A PDF page is really a set of instructions - draw this text here, draw this image there. Adding a black rectangle on top just adds one more instruction; it doesn't remove the ones underneath. Select the "covered" text with a mouse, or copy the whole page into a text editor, and it can come right back.

What actual removal looks like

The only way to be certain nothing is left behind is to stop the page from being made of selectable text and images at all, on the specific page you're redacting - turn it into a flattened picture instead, with the redaction boxes burned into the picture before that happens. A picture doesn't have a hidden text layer underneath it, because it doesn't have a text layer of any kind.

That is exactly what Redact PDF does: draw a box over whatever needs to disappear, and only the pages you've marked get flattened - everything else in the document stays as real, searchable text.

The trade-off, stated plainly

A page you redact loses its text layer entirely, not just inside the box - you won't be able to select or search text elsewhere on that same page afterward. That's the cost of being certain, not an accident. Pages you don't touch are left completely alone.

Common questions

Is this the same as what a law firm or government agency uses? The underlying idea - flatten to remove the hidden layer - is the same principle serious redaction tools rely on. For a document with real legal stakes, still treat this as a tool, not a substitute for a review process; it removes exactly what you draw a box over.

Will my file quality suffer? Redacted pages are rendered at a high enough resolution that the remaining text and images stay clearly readable, just no longer selectable.

Is my file uploaded anywhere? No - the whole process runs in your browser.
