Redact PDF

Draw boxes over anything sensitive and permanently remove it - the page is flattened so nothing underneath is recoverable, processed in your browser.

Drag a PDF here, or choose a file

Draw a box over anything that needs to disappear for good.

You can also paste a file directly (Ctrl+V or ⌘V).

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your file is not uploaded to a server at any point.

Why a Black Box Alone Is Not Enough

Covering text visually doesn't necessarily remove the underlying information from a PDF - if the original text layer remains in the file, someone may still be able to select, copy or extract it. Proper redaction has to remove access to the information, not merely hide how it looks.

Redact Personal and Sensitive Information

Common examples include account numbers, names, addresses, signatures, confidential figures and other information that shouldn't appear in a shared copy. Always review the whole document yourself - the tool removes the areas you mark, but it can't know which sensitive information you forgot to mark.

Frequently asked questions

Real redaction. Drawing a box over text without removing the text underneath is a common mistake - the words are still there, copy-pasteable, in the file's own data. Any page you redact is flattened into a picture, with the boxes burned into the pixels before that happens, so there is no hidden text layer left to recover, anywhere on that page.

Only the pages you actually redact. A page with no redaction box on it is left completely untouched - still real, selectable, searchable text. Only a page you've drawn on becomes a flattened image, and only because that is the one way to be certain nothing under a box is recoverable.

Yes, before you redact - hover a box and click the small X to remove it. Once you click "Redact and download," the flattening is final for that download; start over with the original file if you need to change something afterward.

For a document with real legal or regulatory stakes - discovery, FOIA, medical records - treat this as a tool, not a review process. It removes what you draw a box over, correctly and permanently; it doesn't know what you missed.

No. Every step - reading the PDF, rendering pages, drawing boxes, flattening, and rebuilding the file - happens in your browser.
