How to Remove Hidden Metadata Before Sharing a File

What's actually hiding inside a PDF or photo, and how to strip it before it goes out.

Files carry more information than what you can see in them. A PDF or a photo you send can include details you never typed in and would not have chosen to share - most people only find out when someone points it out.

What is actually hiding in a PDF

PDFs commonly embed a title, author name, the software (and sometimes version) used to create or edit them, and creation or modification timestamps. This matters most when the author field reveals a real name you meant to keep off a document, or when the creating-software field reveals more about your workflow than you intended to disclose.

What is actually hiding in a photo

Photos from a phone or camera typically carry EXIF data: camera make and model, the exact date and time taken, and - if location services were on - GPS coordinates precise enough to identify where the photo was taken. Posting a photo taken at home, with location data intact, can expose your address to anyone who checks.

How to check and remove it

  • For a PDF, use PDF Metadata Remover - it shows you exactly what fields are present before removing anything, so you know what was actually in the file.
  • For a photo, use Image EXIF Remover to strip camera and location data before sharing it.

One honest limitation

PDF-editing libraries (including the one this site uses) stamp their own name into a PDF's Producer field whenever they save a file - there is no public way to leave that specific field blank. Every other field - title, author, subject, keywords, creator - is fully removed. Worth knowing if you need to explain why a "cleaned" PDF still shows a Producer value.

Common questions

Does this happen automatically when I share a file? No - metadata stays in the file until something explicitly strips it. Most apps do not remove it on their own.

Will removing metadata change how the file looks? No - only the hidden data is affected, not the visible content.
