AI Background Remover

Remove the background from a photo of a person automatically, or click a product or object to cut it out, using on-device AI in your browser.

Drag a photo here, or choose a file

A person is found automatically; for a product, you click it. JPG or PNG.

You can also paste a file directly (Ctrl+V or ⌘V).

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your file is not uploaded to a server at any point.

Two Ways to Remove a Background

A person: choose "A person" and press the button. The tool finds the person on its own, with soft edges around hair, using a model trained for portraits and headshots.

A product or object: choose "A product or object" and click the thing you want to keep. A second model cuts out whatever is under your click, and the preview shows the result straight away. If a part is missing, click it with Add selected. If something extra came along, switch to Remove and click that. Undo steps back one click, and Start over clears the selection. You can keep several objects, such as a pair of shoes, by clicking each one.

Where It Works Well, and Where It Doesn't

Product photos with a fairly plain background give the cleanest cutouts: a mug, a bottle, a shoe, a box. Expect less from very small objects, thin parts such as chains, wires or fine hair on an animal, glass or other see-through items where the background shows through, and objects that touch or overlap others. The edges are good, not retouched studio quality, so a quick check before you use the PNG for a shop listing is worth it.

Create a Transparent PNG

Transparency allows the isolated person to be placed onto a new background, solid color, presentation or design. PNG is used because JPEG doesn't support transparent pixels.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Choose "A product or object" and click the item you want to keep. It works best on a clear photo of a single product against a plain background, and you can add or remove parts with more clicks if the first try misses something.

With Add selected, click the part that is missing and it joins the selection. Switch to Remove and click anything that should not be there. Undo reverses the last click, and Start over clears everything. Editing the selection costs nothing; only pressing Remove background to save the PNG uses one of your daily tasks.

A PNG with the background removed and replaced with transparency, so you can place the subject onto a different background or a solid color.

JPG has no transparency channel at all - PNG is the only common format that can represent "no background here."

No - the AI models run entirely in your browser. The first use downloads the model (a few megabytes for people, about 6 MB for products), then everything happens on your device.
