How to Convert a PDF to Word and Edit It

Turn a PDF into an editable Word document in your browser, what survives the trip, and what to do with scans and password-protected files.

You have a PDF and you need to change something in it: reword a paragraph, fix a date, reuse a table. A PDF is built to look the same everywhere, which is exactly what makes it hard to edit, so the usual route is to turn it into a Word document first.

Convert it

Open PDF to Word and drop in the file. It reads the text on each page along with where it sits, joins lines into paragraphs, turns larger or bolder lines into headings, rebuilds bullet and numbered lists, and turns aligned columns into real tables. You get a standard .docx that opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages. Nothing is uploaded; it all happens in your browser.

What to expect

Text, headings, lists, simple tables, bold, italic and centered or right-aligned lines come across. Pictures, exact fonts, colors and page headers and footers do not, and a complicated layout such as a brochure or a form will need tidying. That is the nature of the format: a PDF records where each piece of text sits on the page, while a Word file is a flowing document, so some structure has to be guessed. A text-heavy report, letter or contract comes out well; a designed flyer does not.

If it is a scan

A scanned PDF is a picture of a page, so there is no text to convert. Run it through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert the result. If it looks slightly crooked, Deskew PDF before the OCR step helps the recognition.

And the other way round

When you are done editing, turn the document back into a PDF with Word to PDF, which keeps the text selectable instead of flattening it to a picture.

Common questions

Can I convert a password-protected PDF? Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, using its password, then convert the unlocked copy.

Why does the Word file look different from the PDF? Word re-flows text to fit its own pages and fonts, so line breaks and page breaks will not match the original, and the fonts are replaced with one standard family. The words and structure are the part that is preserved.

Is my document uploaded anywhere? No. The PDF is read and the Word file is built on your own device.
