Prepare PDF/A Structure

Convert a PDF toward PDF/A-1b, the ISO standard for long-term archiving, processed in your browser.

Drag a PDF here, or choose a file

Adds the archival structure PDF/A-1b requires.

You can also paste a file directly (Ctrl+V or ⌘V).

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your file is not uploaded to a server at any point.

What PDF/A Actually Requires

PDF/A is an ISO standard built for one goal: a file that still opens correctly decades from now, independent of whatever software or fonts happen to be installed at the time. That means a self-contained color profile instead of relying on a viewer's default, metadata that identifies the file as PDF/A, and - critically - every font embedded directly in the file rather than referenced by name.

Adds the Structure, Can't Fix Every File Completely

Filevolo adds the color profile and metadata PDF/A requires. What it can't always fix automatically is a font that was never embedded in the first place - there's no way to reconstruct a font file that was never included, only to flag it. If your PDF used standard fonts (Helvetica, Times, Arial) without embedding them, you'll get an honest warning after conversion rather than a file that quietly falls short. Use Check PDF/A afterward for preliminary checks, then use a full validator for the required profile.

Frequently asked questions

The metadata targets PDF/A-1b. Ask your recipient for the exact required profile before using this preparation tool.

No. Adding a color profile and metadata does not establish conformance. Even with embedded fonts, other profile rules may fail. Validate the result with a full PDF/A validator before submission.

No - PDF/A doesn't allow encryption at all. Run it through Unlock PDF first, then convert the result.

Compare the result with your original, use Check PDF/A for preliminary structural checks, then run a full validator such as veraPDF for the profile your recipient requires.

No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser.
